Partition

A large hard disk can be split partitions and each section is treated by windows as though is were a separate, smaller hard disk.

Patch

Software file that fixes problems with an existing program.

PDF

Portable Document Format. A file format that allows pages of text and graphics to be viewed and printed correctly on PC.

Phishing

A form of internet fraud that tries to trick you into revealing personal details.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics. A format for images that shrinks files sizes using compression but without discarding any data.

Pop-up

A window that displays a website, usually over material already on the screen.

Portfolio

A portfolio is simply another work for a collection of your work in an organised format. Traditionally this was done with paper and ringbinders but at ITeC we use an electronic portfolio (or ePortfolio) called Mahara.

The Key Skills, Essential Skills, ITQ, ITP qualifications as well as other NVQs are assessed by portfolio work instead of exams.

Processor

The chip that is the 'brain' of the computer.
